Distinguishing features:

  • A winter bird in Ireland and Southern UK - Summer in Northwest Scotland
  • Beak is often slightly curved upwards (but not always)
  • Grey-green legs
  • Shy bird, usually solitary, easily spooked (listen to call on the video)
  • Happy to wade deep up to the belly in water
