Distinguishing features:
- A winter bird in Ireland and Southern UK - Summer in Northwest Scotland
- Beak is often slightly curved upwards (but not always)
- Grey-green legs
- Shy bird, usually solitary, easily spooked (listen to call on the video)
- Happy to wade deep up to the belly in water
